Inflammatory Material: A Little Flames Reading Group

Political education was a central part of Big Flame’s work. Members were eager to deepen their understanding of the world around them in order to better analyse and ultimately change it. This education took many forms: from reading theory and political discussion, to more practical matters, such as  writing a leaflet, public speaking and how to operate a duplicator! It also involved personal reflection, as Big Flame was active during a time when the idea that “the personal is political” was gaining ground and their work clearly reflected that shift.

This emphasis on education is evident in the wide range of topics covered in their periodicals, the central role that discussion played in their meetings and summer schools, and how fondly former members speak of their time in Big Flame, experiencing it as an highly educative and transformative experience.

With that legacy in mind, our project volunteers, the Little Flames, are launching a reading group. It will draw on Big Flame’s written record, while also engaging with more contemporary texts. If you’re interested in taking part, then please complete this sign up form, and we’ll be in touch soon to confirm the readings and dates for the first session!
