Volunteer Spotlight – Carina
In her own words, Carina, who completed a placement at the library as part of her Visual Communication MA at the University of Salford, shares her experience of working at the library.
I was inspired to get involved with the WCML after visiting their International Solidarity Poster Exhibition last year. I found it very inspiring and was keen to see more of the collection. I am currently completing my MA in Visual Communications at the University of Salford and decided to become a communications volunteer as part of my university placement scheme. During my time at WCML I designed graphics for the WCML Instagram account promoting upcoming events and exhibitions. I enjoyed being able to look through the archives for inspiration. I especially loved looking through copies of Spare Rib and other feminist publications.
I also enjoyed looking through the libraries’ badge collection and was even inspired to start making my own badges. My placement at the library has allowed me to have first-hand experience working with a heritage site and archive as a designer. After completing my university placement at the library, I am planning to stay on as a communications volunteer. In the future I would love to continue working with political and historical institutions in a creative capacity, including galleries, museums, libraries and archives.
