Volunteering
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and have over 30 volunteers at the library, who play a key role in working with the collection, helping visitors and making connections in the local community.
We are keen to hear from anyone who is interested in volunteering yet particularly welcome those who are interested in helping in the following areas.
Collections
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers with an interest in working with archive and library collections to help as part of our collections team to help us manage our large and diverse collection. Your responsibilities would include cataloguing and documenting items within the collection as well as inputting data into databases. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience working in collections and you will receive support from our experienced librarian and Object Handling Training.
Communications
Are you interested in helping us tell the story of the working class movement? We are looking for support to build better connections with our audience, celebrate the work that we do and inspire people with the stories from our collection. Our communications team are responsible for helping manage our social media and drafting copy for our newsletter. As part of this team, you’ll have an opportunity to explore the archives of the library in researching for our blog and ‘on this day’ social media feature. You will receive a full induction and training and will assist the Engagement and Events Coordinator with the library’s marketing objectives.
Front Desk
Front desk volunteers provide a warm welcome to visitors, offering information about exhibits, events, and membership. They assist with reading room visitors, answer inquiries, and ensure a positive visitor experience. This role involves good communication skills and an interest in working class history.
Tours
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can help bring the library to life by delivering tours to visitors and groups. Tours allow visitors to learn more about the many objects we have on display, the building itself and our founders, Ruth and Eddie Frow and their motivations for founding the library. Full training will be provided, and no experience is necessary.
